Onus on the taxman to define "office holder" for IR35
Having decided to abandon the 'controlling persons' proposals it was going to be necessary for the taxman to address the anomaly of 'office holders' being able to escape IR35, writes Andy Vessey, senior tax consultant at Qdos Consulting, as such persons were not defined within the legislation. NICs, however, are still applied to the fees from such a role. .... Read Full Article

Introduction

Welcome to the April 2013 newsletter from PSS-Europe.

A simple project management rule; do not invest where there is no benefit.

So, why has the EU lent Cyprus €10bn? The best €10bn will buy the EU is a delay before the inevitable, EU economies will continue to diverge and eventually a crisis will occur that is so big (leading contenders are Spain and Italy at the moment, with Greece as an outside bet for the economy to collapse under the austerity measures imposed) the EU will not be able to bail the country out and the Euro zone will start to implode.

I have been to Cyprus and it is not even a whole island we are talking about, half of it is “managed” by the Turkish, I cannot see how this half an island is going to be able to generate sufficient revenue to pay the interest on a €10bn loan, let alone make capital repayments.

What a precedent though, if you are moderately wealthy to rich then money will be taken from your bank accounts. Spain and Italy are massive in comparison to Cyprus, or is that the point? Perhaps the solution is to raid the accounts of all people in the Euro zone with more than €100k in deposits and put it towards the bailout fund? Why just punish the Cypriots when all countries in the Euro zone would feel the impact of Cyprus leaving the Euro?

I am also guessing just before the point the Euro zone implodes the Germans (who will have prepared for this) will re-distribute the Deutsche Marks they are keeping in the bank vaults. They will set it at the “German Euro” exchange rate, one DM = one €, they won’t even need to change the prices in the shops and in a short time they will be back to business as usual. This will trigger all the other countries to revert to their previous currency and depending on the state of their economy they will devalue accordingly to stimulate growth (buy your BMW before this happens because afterward it is going to be very expensive).

Another good project management rule is always having a regression plan. If things go seriously a rye then there needs to be a controlled withdraw to a pre-planned stable position. These same people who thought that amazingly diverse economies that are at different stages of maturity and are developing at different speeds could share the same currency should not be left to solve the problem. They are holding on to an ideal and have vested interests causing them to be passionate about it and blind to the reality around them. More than likely within the next five years the regression plan will be needed, I bet the Germans have theirs, let’s hope for their sake all the other Euro zone countries have theirs.

Choosing an accountant

Business Consultant

Chartered accountant Tim Haggard of My Bookkeeping Online answers some key questions about finding and choosing an accountant

How important is it to find the right accountant?
Really important, if you take the time to find a good accountant, it could save your business a lot of time, effort and money.

And if I don't find the right accountant?

Some accountants are only interested in the fee, others can be too busy to give you the service you need, which means your business suffers, which can include paying more tax than you need to. No matter how new or established your business - or how small it is - if you're paying an accountant, you should receive a first-class service, otherwise, what's the point? Read more..
