Figures show that they spent £909 million on consultants in 2007/8. The figure is a 43 per cent decline on the amount spent two years earlier in 2005/6. However six out of the 16 departments - more than one in three - reported a rise or no change in the amount spent.

Social networking for business

Social networking may sound fluffy, but it can translate into real benefits for you and your company. William Baker, a professor of marketing at San Diego State University , surveyed 1,600 executives and found that firms that rely heavily on external social networks scored 24 percent higher on a measure of radical innovation than companies that don't. Online networks can help you hire the right people, market your product — or even find a manufacturer. Here are four professionals who used social networks to change the game. Read Full Article

Introduction

Waiting seems to be the order of the day at the moment, be it budgets to be announced, to hear what clients think of candidates or waiting for the new financial year. Whatever the reason the year has not quite progressed with the promise the start of the year indicated.

This month PSS-Europe has completed an initial scoping document for a BPR project for a SME based in Hatfield, the business has been very successful and out grown the processes that got it up and running. The plan is to review current state, develop processes that will allow the company to continue to grow and then implement those processes. An interesting opportunity as the turnaround time will be quite short and benefits realization will happen quickly.

One of the biggest changes this month is an agreement with W3Partnership for new business development. PSS-Europe has been both time and skills poor in this area, W3P will mean that dedicated resource is working on new business development. This month PSS-Europe has become an official supplier of project resources to Tech Mahindra and CACI, both are large tier one suppliers to major technology companies.

A lot of companies run preferred supplier lists, not being on the list means not getting work and getting on the list is a real challenge. One approach I am working on is the one time supplier use, as most companies have the facility to use a supplier once or twice without having to add them to the PSL. Once the initial trial has been agreed and the customer then sees the quality of the candidates and has a supplier that does what they have said they would do when they said they would do it, it is much easier to get repeat business and get on to the PSL.

A trend that appears to be increasing is the advertising of opportunities on social/interest networks e.g. Linkedin, Plaxo, Naymz etc. Not sorted the best approach to this yet, the efforts made to date on renewable energy engineering sites have only elicited a single digit percentage response rate. The potential for utilizing these sites is huge it is just a matter of working out how.

Heads down for the next Budget!

This Budget was a real non-event. The long list of things that didn't happen are all good news. So when is the next one?
The Budget delivered by Mr Darling last week has received a muted reception. There are no ghastly surprises in the detail, and in summarising the technical content it could aptly be described as a true “non event”. This Budget was more important for what it did not include, than for what it did. Read Full Article
