Purpose
To work as a member of the Strategy team to develop the client's technology strategy. This identifies those areas where the client can deliver maximum value to catalyse commercial application of new low carbon energy technologies and systems. The Strategy Manager will have responsibility for further development of the client's technology portfolio that includes working closely with the client's teams and leveraging outputs from the client's recently commissioned 2050 energy systems model. They will also develop the client's UK regional engagement strategy that will identify priority regions and organisations to connect with in support of the client's technology programme delivery. Additionally, and importantly, they will lead the dissemination of project outputs from the client's programmes with industrial and government members – this will involve working closely with their senior representatives to identify how the materials should be tailored to maximise their impact. This is a key role at the client that will lead the development of strategic thinking, engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, facilitating the development of a shared vision and purpose, and getting buy in from senior government and industry decision makers.
Organisation
You will be part of a Strategy team having diverse skills and experiences, who together:
Deliver the technology strategy and plans to invest up to £1 billion in the development and early stage demonstration of large-scale engineering systems in a commercial context;
Develop technology landscapes, 2050 roadmaps and programme focus areas for the client that culminate in requests for project proposals, evaluation and subsequent contract placement;
Engaging with the energy industry to identify potential project partners and to highlight the client's areas of interest, including inviting critique of the programme roadmaps
Work closely with client's teams and particularly Programme Delivery through the project lifecycle to ensure the strategic objectives are realised including maximising member value;
Use understanding of the big picture aspects of the UK energy system to influence debates and help stakeholders evaluate the potential of different technologies;
Communicate outputs and insights from projects with the major stakeholders.
Principal Accountabilities
Through personal authority build relationships with influential thinkers and experts in their areas of responsibility.
Working with the client's teams and its members to further develop the client's technology portfolio strategy, including leveraging outputs from the client's energy systems model;
Develop the client's regional engagement strategy that involves reaching out to local communities and developers to support project delivery in areas such as buildings and smart systems;
Engage with senior representatives of the client's member organisations to raise awareness of the project outputs, identify areas of specific interest and to produce tailored materials;
Understand the interaction between developing energy technologies, available natural resources and economics in the UK now and into the future.
Contribute to the development of the knowledge base, communications material and presentation of the client's knowledge to key partners.
Person Profile
This is a key role in the Strategy team and the Strategy Manager needs to be results orientated, entrepreneurial and self-motivated with extensive analytical, organisational and presentation skills. They need to be able to lead, facilitate and persuade through their personal authority and approach.
Qualifications:
Degree in Engineering. An MBA is desirable
Professional Qualification in Engineering or Technology
Experience:
Minimum 10 years' experience in energy industry and/or consulting
Experience of technology/business strategy and planning
Experience of developing relationships with major project developers and stakeholders – both private and public sector
Track record of working with colleagues across organisation boundaries to integrate inputs to business and technology plans.
Delivery of high quality, impactful presentations and reports for senior leadership
Familiarity with low carbon energy technologies
Competencies:
Proven analytical and strategic thinking skills in complex business environments
Evidence to indicate a strong relationship builder with internal and external contacts.
Ability to deliver high profile projects within ambiguous environments.
Accomplished influencing and communication skills including strong report-writing capabilities.
A strong team player with ability to leverage organisation knowledge.
Other Requirements:
Willingness to travel, within the UK and globally as required.
